“Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays,” which will feature about 90 minutes of drama about love and equality.
UAB’s Department of Theatre has done the festival of 10-minute plays every spring for the past decade, department chair Kelly Dean Allison said, but from here on out, they plan to add an extra year between the 10-minute plays to explore something different.
“In that odd year, we wanted to explore other possibilities, explore new forms,” Allison said. “People could simply come together with an idea,” and make it happen with whoever was interested and available. This is exactly what happened when someone suggested “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays.”
Originally a collection of nine short plays, the department will be performing eight of them, each lasting about 10 minutes each, without an intermission.
On Feb. 27-28 at 7:30 p.m., and March 1-3, at 2 p.m., Birmingham is invited to UAB’s Alys Stephens Center to watch “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays,” which will feature about 90 minutes of drama about love and equality.
“I think we are producing this play at a very important time in our world,” Allison said. “I think what we have learned is there are individuals in society who don’t feel seen and don't feel accepted.”
Admission is $15 for the general public, $6 for students and $10 for UAB employees and senior citizens. Go to uab.edu/cas/theatre for more information.
