A Barbers Blessing Birmingham event in Linn Park, where local members of the Birmingham Barbers Coalition spend a day giving free haircuts to those in need.
On the third Sunday of every month, Birmingham Barber Coalition creator and neighborhood barber DeJuan Hall joins a rotating cast of six or seven Birmingham-based barbers for a day of service at Linn Park.
The Barbers Blessing Birmingham monthly event, which offers free haircuts for the homeless or those in need, lasts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It started after Hall began it as a Thanksgiving service project in November 2017.
“After we did the first event, we saw how helpful it was and how the people were really looking forward to it, so we continued to do it. So now we are eight months later, and we’re still doing it,” he said, which is why he formed the Birmingham Barber Coalition.
No one has to pay for the haircut, Hall said, but they do encourage people to spread the word and bring friends next time that might need a fresh hairdo.
“A lot of the times, [people getting haircuts] say, ‘Man, it isn’t even about the haircuts, it’s about that y’all spend time and talk to us,’” Hall said.
They also cook food for everyone, play cards and spend the day talking, Hall said.
“It’s a good time … making music, just hanging out in the park,” he said.
Anyone is welcome, Hall said, and he encourages people to bring food to donate for the day.
