Monday, May 29, is Memorial Day, a national holiday and a chance to honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have given their lives while serving the country.

The following is a run-down of most city, country and federal facilities in Birmingham and whether they are closed for the holiday.

CITY

Birmingham City Hall will be closed, and there will also be no garbage pick-up on Monday.

Birmingham City Schools will hold their last day of classes for the year on Friday, May 26, and will be closed beginning Monday.

The Birmingham Public Library, including the central library downtown and all branches, will be closed.

However, some city facilities will be open.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, at 2612 Lane Park Road will be open, as usual, from dawn to dusk. Only the offices will be closed. For more information, call 414-3950 or go to bbgardens.org.

The Birmingham Zoo will be open May 27-29, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and will offer free admission to all veterans, as well as all active duty and retired military personnel and their dependents, through the entire three-day weekend. They are asked to bring their proof of military service (military ID card, dependent ID card, driver’s license, etc.). For more information, call 879-0409 or go to birminghamzoo.com.

COUNTY

Veteran’s Day is also a holiday for Jefferson County employees, so all county facilities will be closed. This includes the Birmingham and Bessemer courthouses, all satellite courthouses, the Jefferson County Schools and Cooper Green Mercy Health Services.

STATE

Veteran’s Day is a holiday for all state employees, meaning that the state driver’s license office on 908 Bankhead Highway West will be closed.

FEDERAL

All federal offices in Birmingham, including the federal courthouse downtown, will be closed.

In addition, all locations of America’s First Federal Credit union will be closed.
