The Jazz in the Park series — presented by Magic City Smooth Jazz — is back for its 10th season, presenting nationally known artists at free concerts in Birmingham and other Alabama cities through Oct. 13.

Jazz in the Park began in April but has 23 concerts left statewide, including several dates in Birmingham. Twelve of the concerts will occur in neighboring communities like Bessemer, Hoover and Mountain Brook.

Upcoming events include Bo Berry and Adam Hawley playing at Avondale Park on June 2, 6-9 p.m., Cashmere Williams and Carol Albert at Arlington Antebellum Home & Gardens on June 9, 6-9 p.m., and The Green Light Band and Ves Marable at East Lake Park on Father’s Day, June 16, 6-9 p.m.

Bernard Lockhart, founder and executive director of Magic City Smooth Jazz, said he enjoys presenting jazz because it “isn’t represented on a regular basis throughout the state of Alabama.”

Jazz is also “family friendly” and attracts all ages, Lockhart said.

The series also exposes audiences in the state to the “talent and musicianship” of Alabama’s own jazz players, he said.
