The Mercedes-Benz Marathon Weekend — a premier event that attracts elite runners from other states and countries — returns to downtown for its 18th year, Feb. 8-10.

The weekend includes the Mercedes-Benz Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay, as well as the Regions Superhero 5K and Kids Mercedes-Benz Marathon. Due to Interstate 20/59 construction, races will be held near Railroad Park, race director Kim Gillikin said.

In 2018, the races attracted 11,500 participants, including 50 well-known national and international runners, according to Gillikin. The full marathon drew runners from 34 states and six other nations, she said.

The weekend raises money for The Bell Center in Homewood, which helps children at risk for developmental delay.

The UAB Callahan Eye Hospital & Clinics health and fitness expo and packet pickup will be held at Boutwell Auditorium Friday and Saturday.

Saturday events include the 5K and Bell Center Children’s Run. The marathon, half-marathon and marathon relay take place Sunday. The Jim ‘n Nick’s Bar-B-Q Post Race Party & Awards Ceremony will be a block party on 14th Street South.

At press time, organizers had not finalized the race route. For updates and an event schedule, go to mercedesmarathon.com.
