Birmingham nonprofit Addiction Prevention Coalition seeks to help fight addiction to opioids, including heroin and prescription painkillers.

The group will host its second annual large public event, the End Heroin Bham Walk, at Railroad Park on Feb. 24.

Participants include friends and family members of people who have suffered or died from addiction, as well as people in recovery. A portion of the proceeds will pay for scholarships for substance abuse treatment.

The walk drew 3,700 people in 2017 and is “a solidarity event for anyone who has been touched by addiction,” said Danny Molloy, APC brand ambassador.

It also serves as a much-needed emotional boost, according to Molloy. “People found hope,” he said, referring to the 2017 walk. “It was a powerful event.”

Registration for walkers is $20 in advance or $25 the day of the event. Walkers can choose to take part as fundraising participants and form walk teams.

Participants who don’t want T-shirts or “‘I am Walking for” lanyards can walk for free. There will be speakers and food trucks, and friendly, leashed dogs are welcome.

Check-in and registration begins at 9 a.m.; the walk begins at 10 a.m.
