Participants at the Girls Inc. annual summer camps not only have a great time, Development Director Karen Griner said, but they also get to experience hands-on learning that inspires them to set goals for their future.

The Girls Inc. of Central Alabama Crestwood Summer Camp, which lasts eight weeks, will be at the Crestwood Community Center from June 4 through Aug. 3, except the week of July 4.

“We believe Girls Inc.’s summer camps are important because girls face so many obstacles to success,” Griner said. “For example, we know that one in six girls will not finish high school.”

Without continual learning throughout the summer, Griner said, girls risk falling behind in all subjects, which could make it difficult for them to stay on track for graduation.

According to their website, the Girls Inc. camp experience consists of programming, people and an environment that empowers girls to succeed. Girls who attend engage in daily learning in subject areas including science, math, English, health and wellness, arts and culture and economic literacy, Griner said. They participate in classroom-style learning and get to experience hands-on lessons led by trained instructors.

Campers also go swimming and on several field trips throughout the summer, Griner said, in addition to practicing dance and performance arts, which they show off during an end-of-summer production.
