Iron takes the field in new Alliance of American Football

Football fans in the Magic City have a chance to turn out for their own professional football squad this spring as the Birmingham Iron takes the field for a 10-game season.

The Iron — a charter member of the new Alliance of American Football —  opened their season on Feb. 10 with a home game against the Memphis Express, winning by a score of 26-0.

The team, whose roster will include players from such state schools as Alabama, Auburn and UAB, has three home games scheduled at Legion Field in March:

► Mar. 3: San Antonio Commanders, 3 p.m.

► Mar. 9: Orlando Apollos, 1 p.m.

► Mar. 31: Atlanta Legends, 3 p.m.

The AAF — founded by former NFL executive Bill Polian and filmmaker Charlie Ebersol — operates as a single entity, with all teams owned and operated by the league.

The league, which has a TV contract with CBS Sports, is promising a fan-friendly experience, with a free app to stream AAF games, a fully integrated fantasy football experience and — perhaps most important — inexpensive tickets.

Single-game tickets for the Iron start at $18 and season tickets at $75.
