In July, the city of Birmingham and the Alabama Department of Transportation will host a series of public involvement meetings regarding the design of the future space under the I-59/20 bridges between 15th Street North and 25th Street North, through the City of Birmingham’s Central Business District.

The meeting will consist of a brief presentation, followed by an informal discussion with representatives from ALDOT, the City of Birmingham and the design consultants, according to a press release sent out by ALDOT.

On Tuesday, July 17, there will be three sessions, with all meetings taking place at the exhibition hall in Boutwell Municipal Auditorium, located at 1930 8th Avenue North.

On Tuesday, July 24, there will also be three sessions, all meeting at Birmingham CrossPlex - Bill Harris Arena, located at 2337 Bessemer Road.

According to the project history on the Alabama Department of Transportation website, the I-59/20 corridor improvements was initiated in the spring of 2012 as a "maintenance project," and Phase II includes replacing the bridges, in addition to other renovations.

ALDOT East Central Region Public Information Officer Linda Crockett said there is no more information about the meetings at this time, but for further specifics on the project, she suggests reading more at https://rp.dot.state.al.us/I59_20/.
