H2 Real Estate and Dobbins Group, a Homewood real estate investment group, recently announced plans to commission a temporary mural on an empty warehouse located at 2247 First Ave South adjacent to The Rotary Trail.

Members of the community are encouraged to submit designs for the mural for a cash prize, according to an Aug. 1 news release from H2.

Local artist Andy Jordan, Birmingham native and graduate of the Savannah College of Arts and Design, will execute the winning idea.

Making space for street art is a way for property owners to “embrace the creative culture of the community,” said Carter Hughes, H2 owner.

It is a way “to provide engaging artwork that speaks to the renaissance of our city and establishes new and interesting places for Birmingham residents and visitors to experience,” Hughes said.

There are no restrictions on the format or style of the submission, other than it must be in color, according to the news release.

H2 is exploring painting one or both sides of the building, depending on the submissions received.

“The power of this project H2 has initiated is in giving those individuals — who may have only seen their voice on pieces of paper — a public platform from which to sing,“ Jordan said.

Jordan is known locally for his murals in the Theatre District and on the Birmingham Breadworks building.

The building is situated at the edge of a vacant piece of land that Birmingham-based H2 and Dobbins Group have plans to develop in the next few months.

Submissions for the mural will be accepted until Aug. 31, and the winning design or designs will be announced in September.

Anyone may submit their mural ideas to catherine@h2realestate.com.
