Brenda J. Phillips Hong, founder and executive director of Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies, said they’ve been able to donate 30 mammograms at the Brookwood Diagnostic Center for Women to people in need in the last year. The group has also provided transportation and cleaning services to women being treated for breast cancer.

They do this, she said, through funding from events like the upcoming family-friendly annual event at Legion Field called Sistah Strut. On Sept. 22, from 7-11 a.m., Sistah Strut 2018 will raise awareness of breast cancer and donate funds from the event to pay for mammograms for women who can’t afford it.

The event, which is in its eighth year, Hong said, welcomes people from races and walks of life but focuses on funding minority and traditionally underserved women in need. Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies is a Birmingham-based nonprofit that supports the education and early detection of breast cancer.

Hong said they make sure the event is catered to persons with various physical abilities. Last year, more than 600 people attended, she said.

A prepaid ticket is $25, while a ticket the day of is $35. People are encouraged to form teams.
