Sloss Furnaces to host metal arts workshops

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark offers visitors a look into this rich industrial legacy as the once world’s largest manufacturer of pig iron.

But thanks to Sloss Metal Arts, the site takes on a new life as a place for hands-on fun and learning.

The facility will host a full weekend of workshops in casting, sculpture, welding and blacksmithing Aug. 16-18. The classes will take place Friday 6-9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be an open studio in iron and bronze casting Friday through Sunday for artists and others with some casting experience. Beginners can take a class in cast-iron sculpture Friday through Sunday. No experience is needed.

Participants in a creative welding class Saturday and Sunday will learn to make cool objects for their homes and gardens. No experience is necessary. There will be a class in basic and intermediate blacksmithing Saturday and Sunday.

Sloss will also host Cast Iron Bowl Night on Friday, Aug. 23, 6-9 p.m. Metal artists will help attendees create their own cast-iron bowls.
