St. Patrick’s Day events begin March 16 in Five Points South

It’s time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Five Points South.

Thanks to the Five Points Alliance (FPA) and the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society, festivities are scheduled in the historic neighborhood through Saturday, according to a news release from the FPA.

Here is the schedule:

7th Annual Irish Flag Raising & The Great Birmingham Irish Toast: Wednesday, March 16, with the Flag Raising from 5:30-6 p.m. and the Irish Toast from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The flag raising and the toast will take place at the flagpole at Chick-fil-A. The Birmingham Irish Cultural Society will lead the ceremony, which will include pipe and drum performances and an Irish blessing. The ceremony also serves as the official beginning of the St. Patrick’s celebration. Following the ceremony, a procession led by bagpipers will take the crowd to Black Market Bar & Grill, which will host Birmingham’s largest St. Patrick’s toast and offer drink specials.

St. Patrick’s Day in Five Points South: Thursday, March 17 from 7 a.m. to late night. Participating Five Points South bars and restaurants, including 5 Point Public House & Oyster Bar, Black Market Bar & Grill, Dave’s Pub, Filter-Coffee Parlor, Iron City Pizza Co., Little Italy's Pizza and Pints, Mellow Mushroom, Sleek Sports Bar, The Hive and Unplugged Bar, will offer live music and Irish-themed food and drink specials.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Saturday, March 19, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Birmingham’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade will start at Southern Research on Ninth Avenue South, make its way through Five Points South and end at 13th Avenue South. The festivities will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and will feature food and drink specials along with live music all day at participating businesses along the parade route. Parking is available in the Five Points parking deck at 2012 Magnolia Ave. for a $4 day rate. The Birmingham Irish Cultural Society also hosted its 42nd Annual St. Patrick’s Dinner on March 12 at Inverness Country Club with proceeds benefiting benefit Kid One Transport.
