Temple Beth El Civil Rights to host historic marker dedication

by

Temple Beth El will dedicate a historic marker commemorating the attempted bombing of the Southside synagogue in 1958 in July.

The marker was approved by the Alabama Historical Association and is located on 21st Way.

Temple Beth El has launched a civil rights initiative and will be constructing an exhibit about its connection, and the Birmingham Jewish community’s connection, to the civil rights struggle. It is currently in the design stage and a film being produced as well. The Beth El Civil Rights Experience explores Birmingham’s civil rights history through the lens of the Jewish community.

The public is invited to the event to remember this attack on the community, reflect on its lessons, and recommit to acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world).

The marker dedication at Temple Beth El (2179 Highland Avenue South) at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 17.
