The Tiny House Roadshow kicked off its three-day expo at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex on Friday, July 22.

James Brewer, the founder of AL Tiny Homes who is serving as the Roadshow’s host builder, said the event is the first of its kind to ever visit the state of Alabama.

“I’m very excited,” Brewer said. “I’m glad to see such a big turnout. There is a lot of enthusiasm.”

Streams of people interested in discovering more about the tiny house movement were already filing onto the BJCC’s convention floor less than an hour after the event’s noon start time. Brewer said he expects anywhere between 15,000 to 35,000 people to attend throughout the weekend.

“Every city in America is red hot on this thing,” said Roadshow organizer Dale Geist. “I could bring it anywhere, and I’d have the same turnout.”

Brewer said 16 builders have brought a total of 21 tiny houses.  They will be open for touring throughout the weekend. Vendors that sell tiny house-related products, like solar panels, siding and decking, have also set up booths.

Brewer said that the National Organization of Alternative Housing, which inspects and certifies newly constructed tiny houses, will be hosting five seminars per day. Brewer said NOAH representatives will answer questions about the tiny house certification process, including how it works and why it’s important.

Roadshow hours are Friday from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $12.50 for adults ages 13-65, $11.25 for military and adults ages 65 and older and $5 for children ages 7-12.
