The story of “Chitrangada: The Warrior Princess” will be brought to the stage this month by Notinee Indian Dance classical-fusion troupe, Creations Kathak Dance and Alabama Waldorf School.

The performance will be a musical dance drama telling the story of a woman rebelling against the expectations of the society she was raised in after falling in love. The play was written by Nobel prize winner, writer and musician Rabindranath Tagore.

Notinee troupe Director Pia Sen said via email that “Chitrangada” is as well known in the Bengal region of India as “The Nutcracker” in the U.S. Sen has performed in versions of the drama and said the idea came to present a version accessible to audiences who don’t understand the original language.

“One of the very unique aspects of this production is the weaving of detailed English narration throughout the production,” Sen said, adding that the play will feature a chorus of actors who will provide narration, interpretation and even opinions to help audiences understand the message behind “Chitrangada.” More than 40 dancers will participate in the production, bringing a variety of Indian dance styles to the stage.

Performances will be Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. at Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children, available at notinee.com.
