The Birmingham municipal elections for 2021 will draw to a close today, Oct. 5, with a runoff.

Two incumbents on the Birmingham City Council, William Parker and John Hilliard, will face challengers in the runoff after failing to get at least 50% of the vote in their districts in the Aug. 24 election.

Parker, who represents District 4 and currently serves as City Council President, has served on the council since 2013.

He will face J.T. Moore in the runoff. Moore is a Woodlawn resident, community activist and political newcomer.

Hilliard, who represents District 9 and was elected to the council in 2017, will face LaTonya Tate.

Tate lives in North Birmingham, worked for about 15 years in the health care industry and serves as CEO and executive director for the Alabama Justice Initiative.

There are also two school board races to be decided.

In District 1, Sherman Collins Jr. and incumbent Douglas Ragland face off.

In District 9, Le’Darius Hilliard and Jason Meadows are on the ballot.
