A familiar face on the Birmingham barbecue scene is featured on the September 2 premiere of Netflix’s Chef’s Table: BBQ.

Rodney Scott, Founder, chef and pit master of Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ in Avondale will be one of four barbecue chefs from across the globe featured on the Emmy-nominated series, which is in its sixth season. The show highlights renowned chefs from around the world who share their personal stories, inspirations, and unique styles.

Along with Scott, three other chefs and pit masters will be featured including barbecue masters from Texas, Australia and Mexico.

From cooking barbecue over wood coals since age 11, in his family's small-town store. Scott’s Variety Store & Bar-B-Q in Hemingway, SC, Scott has come a long way the last 25 years.

The show delves not just into the importance of the whole hog BBQ tradition to the culture of the South and Rodney's commitment to preserving this heritage, but into the forces that created the man Rodney is today.

He partnered with Birmingham-based Pihakis Restaurant Group to open Rodney Scott’s BBQ on King Street in Charleston, SC, in 2018, and the restaurant was named one the 50 Best New Restaurants by Bon Appétit. Also that year, Scott was named Best Chef: Southeast by the James Beard Foundation Awards.

Scott opened his second location in Birmingham’s Avondale district in February 2019 serving his South Carolina-style barbecue and famous vinegar-based “Rodney’s Sauce.” The franchise is continuing to grow, with two more locations set to open in 2021: one in the historic West End of Atlanta along with a second Birmingham location.

Chef’s Table: BBQ on Netflix began streaming on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
