Birmingham XPress hitting the streets next week

The City of Birmingham announced on Sept. 13 that the new bus line, Birmingham Xpress, will begin taking passengers in the city starting Sept. 22

The city’s first bus rapid transit service, BRT, will connect 25 neighborhoods from the bus line’s new Woodlawn Transit Center, near Woodlawn High School, to the new Crossplex Transit Center, across Avenue West and Birmingham Crossplex. 

Birmingham XPress will run Monday through Friday from 5 a.m.-11 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m-10 p.m. The bus line will be closed on Sundays. 

“Simply put, Birmingham Xpress will be a connector for eastern and western neighborhoods to jobs, services and opportunities,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said in the press release.

“It’s so exciting to see the $20 million in federal funding we fought so hard to secure in 2015 pay off in a way that will directly impact Birmingham residents’ everyday lives,” U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell said.

The first 30 days are free, according to the city. 

An app for the new transit service is currently under construction.
