A professor in the UAB Collat School of Business has been recognized as a top social entrepreneurship scholar.

In a new publication that ranked the 100 most influential papers in the field, “A Model of Social Entrepreneurial Discovery” by Patrick J. Murphy — the Goodrich Chair of Entrepreneurship at UAB — was ranked as the sixth most impactful, according to UAB News.

The paper — co-written with Susan M.T. Coombes at Virginia Commonwealth University — appeared in the Journal of Business Ethics in 2009.

The study that reported the rankings was published in July by French researchers Ranville and Barros.

Murphy’s 2009 paper discusses the keys to success for social enterprises seeking to make an impact in terms of the so-called triple bottom-line — economic, but also ecological and social.

Younger business students are very interested in creating enterprises that make a positive social impact, Murphy said.

“Technological advancements and a growing prevalence of socially minded values as Generation Z enters universities are driving greater professional interest in purposeful entrepreneurial careers,” he told UAB News.

Serving abroad

Akhlaque Haque, a professor in the UAB Department of Political Science and Public Administration, has received the senior Fulbright award and will be a senior Fulbright specialist, according to UAB News.

The Fulbright Specialist Program pairs American academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise.

Haque will serve the Indian Institute of Management in Kashipur, India, and will focus on ethical issues in public administration, sustainable development goals and crisis management.

He also served as a Fulbright specialist in 2007.

The Fulbright program, currently suspended due to COVID-19, is expected to resume in January.

Art and body

Some UAB art students, in a summer course called “Art and Exercise,” spent the dog days developing projects inspired by physical fitness, exercise and the human body.

They also teamed up to create a mural for the indoor track in the Campus Recreation Center, according to UAB News.

They wanted to create a vibrant, inspiring mural for people using the track.

The brightly colored mural features figures playing sports, running and hanging out on campus.

Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM won a national Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence for Small Market Radio in August and will be celebrated at a national awards gala Oct. 27.

In May, WBHM won four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the award for Overall Excellence.
