Drivers should avoid the I-20/59 southbound interchange with I-65, after a safety issue with the support system caused ALDOT to close the section of highway through Saturday.

According to an ALDOT release, there was a safety issue with the road's supports while installing a steel girder, which prompted the overnight emergency closure.

The release asked drivers to use alternate routes when possible. The ramps to I-65, both north and southbound, remain open. However, motorists who need a detour will travel I-65 northbound to 16th Street, and then use I-65 south to return to I-59 southbound.

Drivers should also expect delays while traveling on I-65 in the area due to construction and rolling road blocks, a second press release from ALDOT stated.

An additional support is being added at the interchange, and ALDOT is anticipating reopening the lanes by Saturday, April 7. The release stated that there was never any danger to drivers while the construction was underway yesterday.
