The Birmingham City Council, on Friday, March 5, congratulated the girls basketball team at Carver High School for winning the Alabama High School Athletic Association 5A state championship.

The Lady Rams defeated Mae Jemison High School of Huntsville by a score of 78 to 69 in Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham Crossplex on Thursday.

"This team has had a remarkable season and it's been fantastic to watch them make history," Council President William Parker said in a news release.

The council also announced that, beginning March 5, there would be two billboards celebrating the victory by the Lady Rams.

The billboards are both located on I-65, one near the Third Avenue exit downtown and one near the 32nd Avenue exit.

"These student athletes have carried themselves as champions both on and off the court, and we want them to know that the entire city stands behind them,” Parker said.

The boy’s basketball team at Ramsay High School also made the 5A championship game but were defeated by Lee-Huntsville 47 to 29.
