The Birmingham City Council will hold a public hearing on March 17 to consider requests to rezone several properties in the vicinity of the old Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Norwood to make room for a major new development.

Corporate Realty in Birmingham announced plans in 2018 to create a mixed-use development on the site.

The former hospital is bordered by Carraway Boulevard to the east, 25th Street North to the west, 20th Avenue North to the north and 13th Avenue North to the south.

Parcels belonging to several owners are a part of the rezoning.

The zoning on a parcel owned by The Lovelady Center Inc. would change from CB-2, Contingency General Business District; B-6, Health and Institutional District; and CO&I, Contingency Office and Institutional District to “Q”D-4, Medium Density District, and “Q”MU-D, Mixed-Use Downtown. The Lovelady Center Inc., a nonprofit located in East Lake, purchased the old hospital in 2011.

Zoning on parcels at 1521 and 1547 Walnut Hill Circle would change from B-6, Health and Institutional District, to “Q”MU-D, Mixed-Use Downtown.

Zoning would change from R-3, Single-Family District, to “Q”MU-D, Mixed-Use Downtown, for parcels at 2212 and 2214 15th Ave. N. and 1500 Walnut Hill Circle.

The rezoning of these parcels has been recommended by the Zoning Advisory Committee, a sub-committee of the Birmingham Planning Commission; the council’s Planning and Zoning Committee; and the council’s Committee of the Whole.
