City to open warming station at Boutwell Tues., Wed. nights

Due to the blast of Arctic air hitting the Birmingham area this week, the city will open its warming station at Boutwell Auditorium tonight, Nov. 12, and Wednesday, Nov. 13, according to Mayor Randall Woodfin. The shelter will be open from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. both nights.

Woodfin told the Birmingham City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday that clothing items are not needed at the shelter, but that donations of snacks, sandwiches and bottled water are being accepted.

Boutwell Auditorium is located at 1930 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd.

City Council business

The Council had a light workload today but took care of a few relatively small items, including the following:

—Members voted to approve a joint services agreement with Jefferson County to provide for improvements to Cahaba River Road from Dolly Ridge Road to the Cahaba River as a part of a resurfacing project by the County. The work will include milling, resurfacing and other necessary repairs to the road bed for placement of the final paved surface. The city’s share of the costs will be just over $65,500 for the portion of the roadway located in Birmingham.

—The Council approved a professional services contract inter-cooperation agreement for the care of the mentally ill with Jefferson County, the Jefferson County Sheriff;s Office and the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama. As part of the agreement, UAB Hospital will provide care and evaluation of suspected mentally disturbed persons. The city’s share of the service will exceed $100,00) per year for three years. 

—Members accepted a bid from David Acton Building Corporation of Birmingham in the amount of $53,900 for a wheelchair platform lift for the Birmingham Museum of Art.

—The Council also accepted a bid from Takco Construction in Cottondale in the amount of $199,959.66, for drainage and erosion improvement at the Eastern Area Landfill.
