The 2021 political season in Birmingham, leading up the municipal election scheduled for Aug. 24, is officially underway.

Mayor Randall Woodfin will launch his push for re-election to a second term at a drive-in kickoff event next Saturday, Jan. 30, according to a news release from his campaign.

It will be held in the lower parking lot at George Ward Park, 1901 Green Springs Ave, with doors opening at 11 a.m., according to the release.

This event is free and open for the public. Tickets are not required, but an RSVP is encouraged. Alabama mask mandate and social distancing guidelines will be enforced.

Woodfin will have at least two challengers.

Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales, who formerly served on the Birmingham City Council, announced her mayoral candidacy Jan. 18, according to media reports.

Chris Woods, a local contractor, announced his candidacy on Jan. 13, according to media reports. He also ran for mayor in 2017.

Woodfin defeated incumbent Mayor William Bell by a large margin in a runoff election in October 2017.

At age 36, Woodfin became the youngest man to serve as mayor of Birmingham since the 1890s.
