Helping cancer patients affected by hurricane

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center will do whatever it can to help any cancer patients displaced by Hurricane Harvey or otherwise unable to be in the Houston region for tests or treatment, according to an announcement by the CCC director, Dr. Michael Birrer.

“In times like this, cancer care providers are a single team, and we welcome partnering with all of our flood-affected oncologists to help deliver the very best to our patients,” Birrer said.

The CCC will arrange for the immediate appointment and, if necessary, admission for any patient in the MD Anderson Cancer Center system, as well as other hospitals affected by the storm and flooding for whom care has been disrupted, according to Birrer.

For information, call 205-934-5077 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time.

UAB fans can help Houston and South Texas

Fans attending the football game between UAB and Alabama A&M at Legion Field on Saturday are encouraged to bring donations of canned food for the victims of Hurricane Harvey and subsequent flooding, according to an announcement by Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

“We expect a huge crowd for the return of UAB football,” Bell said. “If every fan just brings one canned item, we will make a huge impact.”

Donation boxes will be set up at the gates for fans to drop off their items before going into the stadium.

The first in a series of all-women group art exhibitions, Women with their Work: I, will open at Space One Eleven downtown on Friday, Sept. 8, according to a UAB new release.

The series is organized by SOE and the UAB Department of Art and Art History.
