Hill Center will be ‘Location’ for Khalid

Emerging R&B artist Khalid will give a free concert at the UAB Hill Student Center on Saturday, April 22, at 8 p.m.

Khalid’s song “Location” was released in August 2016 and peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He also performed the song on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Kylie Jenner helped break the tune when she featured it on Snapchat.

He recently released his debut album, “American Teen,” which peaked at No. 9 on the United States Billboard Charts.

Seventeen graduating UAB students will have their works featured in a Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts from April 24-May 6.

The exhibit is free and open to the public, and there will be a free opening reception on Friday, April 28, from 6-8 p.m.

The artists are Mikala Buwalda of Harvest; Erin Croxton of Montgomery; Ala Ismail of Tulkarm, Palestine; Dan Nagorneac of Chișinău, Moldova; Melody Hollenbeck of Wetumpka; Katelyn Ledford of Birmingham; Meredith Martin of Pinson; Bryce Martinez of Mountain Brook; Augusta McKewen of Jackson, Mississippi; Eric Moore of Birmingham; Jacob Phillips of Dothan; Samantha Richardson of Pinson; Vincent Rizzo of San Antonio, Florida; Daniel Senko of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Annie Strong of Hayden.

The streak continues

For the fourth year in a row, students from UAB have been selected for the Amgen Scholars U.S. Program.

This year, three students will take part in the program, which provides 200 undergraduates with fully paid summer research opportunities at 10 of the nation’s premier educational institutions.

The Amgen Scholars summer program is funded by a 12-year, $50 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation to support student research at world-class institutions and is intended to boost student interest in science careers.

Niharika Loomba, a neuroscience teaching assistant in the Department of Biology, will conduct research at Stanford University’s SSRP-Amgen Scholars Program.

Jasmin Revanna, a neuroscience student studying epigenetic mechanisms in the Department of Neurobiology, was accepted by the Amgen Scholar Program at the California Institute of Technology. .

Cody Savage, a neuroscience major, study at Washington University in St. Louis. He is graduating in the fall and hopes to work as a biomedical scientist.

A new cop shop

UAB officials broke ground April 13 on a new two-story, 28,000-square-foot facility that will be the new UAB Police Department headquarters.

The $8.2 million project, which is expected to take 15 months to complete, will be located in the 1100 block of 14th Street South, adjacent to the existing police headquarters building. Wyatt General Contractors is the project’s contractor.

Welcoming international students

INTO UAB, an initiative launched in 2016 to increase the international diversity of the student body and to increase global opportunities for domestic students, recently held a grand opening for its newly renovated space on the the second floor of the Mervyn Sterne Library.

The INTO UAB Center has offices for staff and faculty, 14 classrooms and a learning resource center.

International students can find academic preparation, English language training, admissions support, recruiting and student services.

“We have an incredible INTO UAB team that is creating a supportive community that is committed to helping international students succeed academically and seamlessly integrate into the UAB community,” said Suzanne Austin, senior vice provost and senior international officer.
