French style quartet

The acclaimed Modigliani Quartet, a string quartet based in Paris, will bring their distinctive French style and technical finesse to the Jemison Concert Hall at the Alys Stephens Center on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m., according to a UAB news release.

This performance is part of the ASC Salon Series, which offers the unique setting of onstage seating and a post-performance meet-and-greet.

Modigliani Quartet will present a program of string quartet masterpieces: Mozart’s Quartet in D Major, K. 575; Saint-Saëns’ Quartet No. 1 in E minor, Op. 112; and Dvořák’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 96.

Formed in 2003, the group has played the world’s top venues and will appear in the United States, Japan, Korea, China and extensively in Europe.

The quartet has recorded for the Mirare label since 2008 and has released seven recordings.

The next release will be a complete recording of the Schumann string quartets.

Tickets are $55 for the performance onstage seating and post-show VIP reception, or $35 for the performance with choral balcony seating.

A limited number of $25 tickets are available for UAB students and faculty, and all UAB students, faculty and staff may receive a 20-percent discount on single tickets.

BPR ‘on national stage’

A UAB publication has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

The Birmingham Poetry Review has been nominated for the 2018 Small Press Publisher Award by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, according to a UAB news release.

The AWP is the main governing body of creative writing programs nationwide.

BPR, founded in 1987, publishes original poetry -- including the work of nationally recognized poets -- translations and reviews.

“Winning the award, or being chosen as a finalist, would really place BPR firmly on the national stage,” said Adam Vines, BPR editor-in-chief.

The award includes a $2,000 honorarium and a complimentary exhibit booth at the AWP Conference and Bookfair.

The AWP conference committee will choose five finalists from among the nominees in November.

The winner will be chosen at the AWP conference in March.
