PLAYING THE HITS

Veteran singer, songwriter, musician and hitmaker Michael McDonald will perform at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at UAB on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m.

Winner of five Grammy Awards, McDonald is known for his soulful, distinctive voice and formidable keyboard playing.

A Los Angeles studio musician in the early 1970s, McDonald began playing with Steely Dan on tour and also appeared on several of their records.

He made his name with music fans when he joined the Doobie Brothers in 1976 and served as singer, keyboardist and songwriter on several Top 40 singles, including “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “Minute By Minute.”

McDonald also had several big hits in the 1980s and 1990s.

His latest recording, “Wide Open,” released in 2017, marks McDonald’s first studio album in nine years and his first set of original material in 17 years.

Tickets are $59, $72 and $85 and $10 for students.

BLOOD AND HONOR

UAB and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in honor of military veterans and first responders at UAB Hospital and UAB Highlands from Feb. 26-March 6.

All blood types are urgently needed, and UAB is one of the largest users in the nation of the blood that the Red Cross supplies, according to a UAB news release.

Here are the locations, days and times--

UAB North Pavilion, 18th Street and Sixth Avenue South

UAB Highlands, 1201 11th Avenue South

The drive offers free T-shirts for donors and a daily drawing for gift cards and gift baskets.

Donors should bring a photo ID. To reserve an appointment time, go to at redcrossblood.org. Sponsor codes are UABNP or UABHIGHLANDS.

CLOSING OUT 'PLAYLAND'

Artist David Levinthal will offer a talk and attend the closing reception for his exhibition, “David Levinthal: Playland,” presented by the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts at UAB, on Friday, March 2.

Levinthal will speak at 5 p.m., followed by the reception at 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

One of the most prolific and acclaimed photographers of his generation, Levinthal uses toys and miniature figures as subjects for his images.

The majority of works on display in the exhibit come from the most recent addition to the AEIVA Permanent Art Collection -- a gift of 59 large-format Polaroids by Levinthal recently donated by an anonymous collector.
