Hands on Birmingham needs volunteers to serve as Smiling Face Client Guides for Project Homeless Connect on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Boutwell Auditorium downtown.

For one day, PHC gives the homeless a chance to access housing, medical care, legal services, haircuts and help obtaining new identification — all free of charge.

As Smiling Face Guides, volunteers help prepare clients for registration and intake, ask them what services they need and guide them to each station. The primary goal is to help engage clients and make them feel welcome.

Volunteers are needed for three shifts — 8:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Training will take place at the beginning of each shift for 10 to 15 minutes.

All PHC volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

One Roof, the clearinghouse and center of coordination for the homeless Continuum of Care system of Central Alabama, partners with Hands on Birmingham, the city of Birmingham, United Way of Central Alabama and over 60 agencies to stage Project Homeless Connect.

Hands On Birmingham, a nonprofit founded in 1998, serves as the volunteer coordinator for about 150 area organizations.
