The young performers of the Red Mountain Performing Ensemble at Red Mountain Theatre Company downtown drew positive attention for their work at the annual Junior Theater Festival Atlanta from Jan. 17-19.

The group members won a national Freddie G Excellence in Dance award for their ensemble work, according to the festival.

They presented selections from “Singin’ in the Rain JR” for a panel of three judges and were praised by Richard Frazier, artistic director of Theatre Macon, for their “outstanding ensemble dance numbers, killer vocals and an energetic performance.”

Ensemble members Anakin White and Tess Patton were named to the Junior Theater Festival All-Stars. The All-Stars performed a song during the festival’s closing ceremony for about 6,600 attendees.

In addition, group members Julia Ferreira, Chase Cowart and Joie Steele made the final call-back for future “how-to” choreography videos for Broadway Junior musicals to be shot in New York this summer. At press time, the final cast had not been determined.

Held at the Cobb Galleria Centre, the festival is the world’s largest event of its type, attracting nearly 7,000 students and educators from 31 states, as well as England, Australia and New Zealand.
