Dr. Vaughn Walker, who has been a licensed veterinarian with a mobile premise permit since 2002, offers low-cost vaccines, heartworm tests and microchips to cats and dogs through his Express Wellness Clinic at six locations in Birmingham and the surrounding area, including Sheppard’s Pet Supply in Crestwood.

“Whether its 40 degrees or 95 degrees, we’re set up out there,” he said.

Every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, Walker sets up in front of Sheppard’s Pet Supply, where he accepts cards and cash. The only reason they cancel, he said, is if there’s rain or lighting.

Although Walker said he carries ear and eye ointment, he doesn’t treat any animals for anything that might require hospitalization.

“If your dog is sick and throwing up and all that, don’t come to us. … I’m probably not going to be able to help you. Take them to a vet where you can get bloodwork,” he said.

His services, Walker said, are about “half-priced of regular costs,” because he has lower overhead costs without a building. By offering mobile services, he also saves people time because it often takes a little longer to make an appointment with a vet.

Walker’s Express Wellness Clinic and Sheppard’s Pet Supply are two separate businesses and don’t share profits, Walker said, but they often see the same clients.
