On Saturday, April 7, Art Town at East Lake Station will celebrate the release of Lori Lasseter Hamilton’s third poetry chapbook, in addition to hosting its first open mic at the space.

Hamilton said the free event will feature her reading some of her new poems, “Body Parts,” with breaks in the reading for other poets or spoken word artists to read. The event is BYOB, and snacks will be available.

“We’ve done several poetry events around here, and people are always asking for an open mic, so I thought this [release] would give us a chance to do that,” said artist Craig Legg, who manages the Art Town space. “Lori is an old friend. I’ve known her for years, and she’s a good poet.”

Hamilton’s chapbook “Body Parts” features nine new and original poems. It is published by New Dawn Unlimited, a nonprofit based in Montevallo dedicated to poetry publishing. Chapbooks are small pamphlets or paperback booklets.

Art Town at East Lake Station is a multipurpose facility consisting of studios and tiny galleries, in addition to a stage, Legg said. It is located at 7611 First Ave. N.

“No matter what kind of poetry you write, whether it’s free verse or formal poetry or even storytelling, feel free to come out and share what’s on your mind; we’ll have fun,” Hamilton said.
