When Starbucks closed in October 2017, it left Five Points South without a coffeehouse. But that gap’s been filled.

The husband-and-wife team of James Little and Jill Marlar opened Filter Coffee Parlor in the old Starbucks location in January. And Filter offers more than just coffee drinks, according to Little, an industry veteran who managed the old Starbucks from 2002-08. Filter is a gathering spot meant to foster conversation and “a true sense of community,” he said.

And Marlar — an actor, printmaker and teacher — wants to host events, such as comedy shows and storytellers, thereby making Filter a vibrant, creative center. “We want to be a hub for that,” she said.

The shop will also sell beans from roasters across Alabama — currently Prevail Union of Montgomery and Red Bicycle in Irondale. And customers will enjoy “a sensory experience” when they buy beans, Marlar said.

“You won’t just pick up a bag of beans, we’ll be there pouring, weighing and grinding your coffee,” Little said.

Filter will bake muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls and other items in-house and offer cakes and cookies from local bakers.

Marlar will curate a selection of retail goods, including glass, pottery and leather, from Alabama artisans.
