Do you think society, or even your own neighborhood, needs more compassionate people?

Anyone wanting to learn how to create a more humane community may wish to attend the new Path to Compassion Speaker Series, hosted by the Alabama Charter for Compassion.

The ACFC will host the lectures in The Clubhouse on Highland, 2908 Highland Ave., the third Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. The lectures, which began in January, are free.

The speaker on March 17 will be the Rev. Dale Cohen of Florence, who previously served at Canterbury United Methodist Church. There’s no April event due to the Easter holiday.

The May 19 lecture will be given by a representative from Greater Birmingham Ministries.

The ACFC is a chapter of the Charter for Compassion International, which was founded by Karen Armstrong, author of the book, “Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life.”

ACFC spokesperson Judy Jones calls the CCI “a worldwide movement to promote the Golden Rule.”

The series will feature local speakers, some from the religious community and some from such disciplines as teaching, health care and hospice work.
