Jefferson County confirms 1st COVID-19 death, state surpasses 1,000 cases

Jefferson County has its first confirmed death from the COVID-19 disease, and this morning the state registered its 1000th patient with the new coronavirus, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Shortly before noon, that number was updated to 1,019 cases statewide.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Jefferson County is now 283, and three additional deaths are under investigation in the county, the state reported.

Meanwhile, Shelby County has 87 COVID-19 cases, two confirmed deaths due to the disease and another under investigation.

Madison County is reporting 101 cases and one death, and Lee County is reporting 77 cases with two deaths. Statewide, the health department is indicating 17 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and seven more deaths under investigation.

Health departments in surrounding states were reporting 4,638 cases and 139 deaths in Georgia, 6,694 cases and 87 deaths in Florida, 2,239 cases and 23 deaths in Tennessee, and 1,073 cases and 22 deaths in Mississippi.

Nationally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting 163,539 cases and 2,860 deaths. The Associated Press is reporting at least 1,500 deaths in New York, including nearly 1,100 in New York City alone.

The World Health Organization this morning is reporting 823,626 COVID-19 cases and 40,598 deaths in 205 countries, areas or territories.
