Birmingham construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie is in the midst of an extensive renovation and expansion of its long-time headquarters in Lakeview.

Work is ongoing and will affect a total of five buildings and 105,000 square feet of space on the campus over the next several years, a company spokesperson told Iron City Ink. In business since 1964, the company has been located on Seventh Avenue South since 1967.

The renovations are a $17 million investment that will bring 140 new jobs to Birmingham, according to a January blog post by the Birmingham Business Alliance.

The changes “will establish more of a campus feel for our headquarters while honoring and preserving the rich character of the Lakeview community,” said Brasfield & Gorrie CEO Jim Gorrie, and the project “will provide an economic boost to the area.”

The firm opened a new IT center in December, the first phase in the effort.

The company spokesperson told Iron City Ink the company used sustainable features in the new facility, such as natural light, LED fixtures and water-bottle refill stations. The company also preserved historic aspects of the building, including portions of the concrete floors and terra cotta walls.
