A grand, historic Victorian home tucked between two buildings at 1006 19th St. S. plays host to the Alys Stephens Center’s ArtPlay House, which offers seasonal classes and workshops for a variety of age groups, including pre-K, elementary and middle school, high school and adults.

ArtPlay is an arts education initiative and part of the Alys Stephens Center’s outreach program, which aims to “make the performing arts accessible to the broadest possible audience and cultivate an understanding of and appreciation for the arts,” according to its website.

In honor of Valentine’s Day this year, ArtPlay is hosting a special one-night adult class: Love Poems and Chocolate Tasting. Local bean-to-bar chocolate company Honeycreeper Chocolate is partnering with ArtPlay to offer a workshop from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, with a chocolate tasting and poetry workshop taught by local poet and teacher Tina Mozelle Braziel.

The class is open to everyone and costs $20.

Another one-day workshop offered this February is a family class called Family Mardi Gras Mask Making, offered on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon. The workshop is $15 and will center on creating individual Mardi Gras masks and learning about the history behind them.

Classes for different ages vary each semester. The ArtPlay House also hosts art-related events through the course of the year, as well as the occasional open houses.
