Welcome to another installment of UAB Briefs.

In this weekly online feature, we keep track of interesting people and events on campus.

Beginning next week, UAB students will proudly show off their work in a BFA show on campus.

On April 5, Birmingham-area students will show their engineering skills when they take part in the annual Egg Drop Contest at Vulcan.

And high school students will compete for cash in a computer programming contest on campus.

ARTISTS SHOWING OFF

The UAB Department of Art and Art History will host its annual Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts on campus from April 1-27, and 16 graduating students will show their work.

The BFA exhibition — and a closing reception on Friday, April 26, from 6-8 p.m. — are free and open to the public, according to a UAB news release.

“The BFA exhibition is a highlight of the BFA undergraduate career,” said DAAH Interim Chair Jessica Dallow.

The artists are Laura Benson, Nicholas Howard, LaKesha Lee, Giani Martin, Thaddeus Mickler, Macy Jane Moon, Anthony Smith and William Webb of Birmingham; James Clay of Alabaster; Frances Hackney of Vestavia Hills; Jameson Evans of Hoover; Jessica M. Ray of Gardendale; Mae Lawhon of Hamilton; Irasema Quezada Hammock of Juarez, Mexico; Mary Kalusche of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Terrence Wimberly of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

AEIVA is located at 1221 10th Ave. S. The facility is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from noon-6 p.m.

CELEBRATING CULTURES

The UAB International Festival — featuring food, music, art, film and other attractions — will be held at the Hill Student Center on Saturday, March 30, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., according to a UAB news release.

The performers will include Grammy-nominated Panamanian hip-hop group Los Rakas, American-Palestinian choreographer and “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist Janelle Issis, dance company Step Afrika and UAB African dance troop Tribe.

General admission is $10; tickets for UAB faculty and staff are $5; and UAB students are admitted for free with a valid ONE Card.

EGGS SERVED OVER VULCAN

The UAB School of Engineering will host its 30th Annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers Egg Drop Contest at Vulcan Park & Museum on Friday, April 5, from 9:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., according to a UAB news release.

Students from Birmingham-area schools will show off their engineering and problem-solving abilities by creating devices that will protect raw eggs from breaking when dropped from the Vulcan statue’s 100-foot-high pedestal.

Elementary, middle and high school students will take part.

“Students will attempt to achieve what seems impossible — dropping raw eggs from the top of the Vulcan without breaking them,” said Zoë Penko, president of the UAB Society of Women Engineers and the UAB American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Entries will be judged on engineering thought and creativity, as well as the mass of the apparatus and the ease with which the egg can be loaded into it.

High school participants must also write a two-page paper explaining their design ideas with theory and calculations.

SMART KIDS

The UAB Department of Computer Science will host the annual State of Alabama High School Programming Contest at Campbell Hall on Saturday, April 6.

Gifted high school students and advanced junior high school students will take part. Competitors are expected to solve six programming problems within a three-hour period.

Schools with three or more participants are eligible for team awards. Both individual students and teams can win cash prizes.

Registration is at 10 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

The contest will take place from noon-3 p.m., and awards will be given out at 3:15 p.m.

There is a $20 registration fee per student — cash or checks only.

Campbell Hall is located at 1300 University Blvd.
