THE EYES HAVE IT

The UAB School of Optometry will conduct free eye examinations for infants between ages 6 and 12 months Monday, April 23, from 1-5 p.m., according to a UAB news release.

The event will be held at UAB Eye Care, located in the Pediatric Optometry Clinic on 1716 University Blvd.

The exams are made possible by InfantSEE, a public health program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an essential part of infant wellness to improve a child’s quality of life.

The program, begun in in 2005 by the American Optometric Association and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, has been discovered retinal cancers and other vision-threatening disorders in infants.

MELT FOR THE CCC

The popular Avondale eatery Melt will help support cancer patients at UAB on Wednesday, April 25, when the restaurant -- at 4105 Fourth Ave. S. -- hosts Dine for a Cure.

This is a fundraising effort in which restaurants partner with the Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

MELT will donate 10 percent of its proceeds from 6 p.m. to close that night to the Brown Family Fund at the CCC, which provides supplies, equipment and educational materials to help cancer patients and their families at UAB.

The fund was named to honor a member of the CCC Young Supporters Board and her family who have been affected by the disease.
