‘HILARITY WITH HEART’

Master of satire David Sedaris will perform at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 13, at 8 p.m.

Sedaris is widely considered to be one of the world’s best humorists and a canny observer of the human condition.

Known for his personal essays and short stories, Sedaris has more than 10 million copies of his books in print, and his work has been translated into 25 languages.

His latest book, “Calypso,” is a collection of semi autobiographical stories.

Regarding  “Calypso,” National Public Radio said that Sedaris has “a remarkable ability to combine the personal with the political, the mundane with the profane, slime with the sublime, and hilarity with heart.”

Tickets are $50, $60 and $70. There are a limited number of student, faculty, staff and ASC member tickets.

OF MICE AND MEN

Noted pain researcher Jeffrey Mogil will deliver the spring PAINTalk lecture at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts on Wednesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m.

The lecture is hosted by the UAB Psychology Advanced Interdisciplinary Nociception (PAIN) Collective.

Mogil’s lecture — “Pain in Mice and Man: Ironic Adventures in Translation” — will explore research indicating that men and women tolerate and remember pain differently.

A professor of pain studies and the Canada Research Chair in the Genetics of Pain at McGill University in Montreal, Mogil is also the founder and director of the North American Pain School and director of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain.

A prolific speaker, he has also written more than 270 peer-reviewed articles.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served before Mogil’s lecture at 5 p.m.
