We also provide updates regarding UAB’s efforts to cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, Gov. Ivey’s “Safer at Home” state order remains in effect and restricts visitors in state hospitals. UAB Hospital and UAB Medicine clinics have implemented and must enforce these visitation guidelines.hospital.

BIRMINGHAM ARTS DRIVE-IN

Drive in and enjoy performances from several popular Birmingham arts organizations while keeping your social distance at “The Birmingham Arts Drive-in,” to be held on Thursday, July 30, and Friday, July 31, at 8:30 p.m. on the UAB campus, according to UAB Media Relations.

The event — to be hosted by Jeh Jeh Pruitt of WBRC-T.V. — will feature performances from the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Opera Birmingham and Red Mountain Theatre Company.

The performances will be shown on a big screen in the parking lot on University Boulevard at 16th Street South, across from the UAB Campus Recreation Center and adjacent to the Hill Student Center.

The event is free, but attendees are required to go to alysstephens.org to make a reservation.

Ticketholders should arrive at the event between 7 and 7:45 p.m. and remain in their cars. Restrooms will be available on-site, and facilities will be cleaned throughout the event.

Performance audio will be transmitted from the UAB campus on 90.6 FM.

The performances will also be streamed on the Alys Stephens Center YouTube channel and by community partner Avondale Brewing, where guests can sit outside and watch the performances.

THE GILMAN WINNERS

Seven UAB students have been selected for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the largest cohort of recipients from UAB in a single application cycle, according to UAB Media Relations.

The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and makes study abroad accessible to a more diverse population of students.

Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 toward their study abroad or internship program costs.

Students are selected for the Gilman Scholarship through a highly competitive application process that awards about 2,500 scholarships each year from a pool of about 10,000 applicants.

“These students will use their time abroad to engage in research, language study and cultural immersion,” said Michelle Cook, interim director of the Office of National and International Fellowships and Scholarships. “It’s a life-changing opportunity.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students are working with the Office of Education Abroad to arrange their trips for 2021.

The recipients, their academic program and destinations are listed below:

QUALITY ONLINE LEARNING

UAB has been named one of 2020’s best schools nationally for online learning for public health and nursing by EduMed.org.

EduMed.org researched and analyzed more than 7,700 accredited schools using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and from the schools themselves.

The primary data points include the number of online programs in the subject area, tuition and fees and access to academic counseling and career placement services.

The Master of Public Health degree at the School of Public Health ranked second among similar programs in America.

The Master of Science degree and R.N. programs at The School of Nursing were ranked in the top 50 in their categories.

“Our eLearning and Professional Studies team has developed a dynamic approach to helping faculty and students in the online learning environment,” said UAB Provost Pam Benoit in a UAB release. “In partnership with talented faculty, this team has designed quality face-to-face, hybrid and online courses and programs.”
