A young leader

Zahrah Abdulrauf — a UAB junior and Tuscaloosa native — recently became a Forbes Under 30 Scholar and took part in the Forbes Under 30 Summit held in Detroit in late October, according to UAB Media Relations.

Young leaders, founders and creators gathered at the event to experience industry-focused excursions and speakers in 20 different content tracks, including artificial intelligence, finance, law, policy and innovation.

“Going to the Forbes Under 30 Summit will allow me to hear from the most creative leaders across a multitude of different industries, and allow me to network with other like-minded attendees,” said Abdulrauf, who is majoring in cognitive science with minors in economics and media studies.

Abdulrauf says her goal is to revolutionize the way people and communities learn, work and develop by helping to nurture entrepreneurial ecosystems and facilitate the development of talent necessary to boost local economies.

She has been active on campus with the University Innovation Fellows and the Women in Entrepreneurship Society.

After taking part in the UAB Commercialization Accelerator in spring 2018, she went to work for Fledging, a student-founded tech company currently running out of Innovation Depot.

And she is helping to launch a new student-run creative services agency in spring 2020 at the Department of Student Media.

Miss UAB chosen

Tiffany Millan was named the winner of the Miss UAB Scholarship Competition held in the Hill Student Center Ballroom campus on Nov. 1, beating out six other candidates, according to UAB Media Relations.

A sophomore from Long Beach, Calif., Millan is majoring in marketing in the Collat School of Business.

A saxophone player, she also won the Talent Award and the Spirit Award,  tied for Miss Congeniality and won a total of $3,150 in scholarships.

The competition is presented by UAB Student Involvement and Leadership.

The competition has been an official preliminary to the Miss Alabama and Miss America competitions since 1983. Miss UAB goes on to compete in the Miss Alabama Competition in June.

The power of story

Members of the UAB Medicine community will share uplifting, humorous and heartbreaking stories from their careers in patient care during the “UAB StoryPower: A Call to Care” event on Thursday, Nov. 14, according to UAB Media Relations.

The event will take place from noon-1 p.m. in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium at 620 19th St. South.

“StoryPower” is presented by the UAB Institute for Arts in Medicine, a collaboration of UAB Medicine and UAB Visual and Performing Arts.

The “StoryPower” event reconnects UAB Medicine employees with their initial inspiration to care for others, through the power of live storytelling, says AIM Director Kimberly Kirklin.

On the program to share stories from their experiences are eight employees, including Chief Medical Officer Dr. Martin Heslin, Minnie Greene of Purple Car and Guest Services and nurse Terri Middlebrooks, who serves as the clinical care coordinator on the ACE Unit.
