MAKING THE LIST

Deborah Grimes, the chief diversity officer for the UAB Health System, has been named one of the Most Influential Women in Corporate America for 2019 by Savoy Magazine in its summer edition.

Trained as a nurse, Grimes held several leadership positions at UAB Hospital, including vice president of quality and regulatory affairs and chief compliance officer. She became chief diversity officer for the health system in 2017.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from UAB’s School of Nursing, a master’s degree from the UAB School of Health Professions and a Juris Doctor degree from the Birmingham School of Law.

“A 33-year veteran of UAB Medicine, Deborah has served in many roles as nurse, attorney and administrator,” said Will Ferniany, CEO of the UAB Health System. “We salute the diversity of experiences she brings to the job each day, and congratulate her on this most deserving recognition.”

OFF TO DUBAI

Jonathan Stoney — a UAB international studies major — has been awarded a William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship and will study at the American University in Dubai this fall.

Ten United States students are selected each semester for the program, which is designed to expose students to culture in the Middle East. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition and housing for one term.

Stoney plans to pursue a career as an international diplomat, ambassador or negotiator.

The Clinton Scholarship at the American University is meant to increase the number of people in the United States and elsewhere who want to work in global relations, one of the goals of the Clinton Presidential Foundation.
