UAB Briefs: Mr. and Ms. UAB named at homecoming game

AND THE WINNERS ARE…

Henry Kendrick, a junior biology major from Shelby County, and Khushee Modi, a sophomore majoring in medical industrial distribution from Helena, were recently chosen as the winners of the 2018 Mr. and Ms. UAB scholarship competition, according to a UAB news release.

Their names were announced at halftime of the UAB Blazers homecoming football game at Legion Field on Oct. 20.

The winners of the competition will each receive $2,500 scholarships and serve as ambassadors of UAB and on the Student Alumni Society Leadership Council in the coming year.

The competition is presented by the UAB National Alumni Society.

Kendrick, 21, is in the UAB Honors College University Honors Program and is on the president’s and dean’s lists. In summer 2019, he’ll bike across the country to raise awareness and funds for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Modi, 20, is the recipient of the Greenlee Industrial Distribution Scholarship and is on the fall 2017 and spring 2018 dean’s list.

First alternates in the competition are Sawyer Summers, a junior from Fairhope majoring in medical industrial distribution, and Anna Virginia Jones, a junior neuroscience major from Memphis, Tenn.

The first alternates receive $1,000 scholarships.


NATIONAL HONOR

The UAB School of Public Health has been named one of the best online Master of Public Health programs in the nation.

OnlineMasters.com released its list of the top online programs for 2018 with UAB ranked at No. 32.

Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the research organization looks at curriculum quality, program flexibility, affordability and graduate outcomes.

The site notes that online students in the UAB program pay in-state tuition no matter where they live and receive the same faculty support as those on traditional classrooms on campus

The online Master of Public Health program at UAB is available in six different concentrations, including epidemiology, health behavior and environmental and occupational health.


TAKE OUT THE CORK

The UAB National Alumni Society will host the 10th annual Uncork Education fundraiser at the Alumni House on Sunday, Nov. 4, according to a UAB news release.

The event features a wine and beer tasting with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m.

A live auction begins at 7 p.m.

The evening will feature mystery prizes and auction items, including gift certificates, Florida vacation rentals, dining at high-end restaurants, holiday gourmet meals for 12 and original artwork,.

Uncork Education raised almost $58,000 last fall and has raised more than $400,000 in the first nine years it has been held.

Singles tickets are $60, and couples tickets are $100.
