Welcome to another installment of UAB Briefs.

In this weekly online feature, we keep track of interesting people and events on campus.

This week, we tell you a little about commencement, which will be held next week at the university.

Numerous UAB undergraduates are showing off their research this year at some major conferences.

And there’s still time to see the Blazers baseball squad in action.

IT’S GRADUATION TIME

Doctoral hooding and commencement ceremonies for the spring will be held in Bartow Arena on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, according to UAB Media Relations.

Approximately 2,100 students will graduate from UAB this spring, with about 1,500 students expected to take part in the ceremonies.

The commencement ceremony for master’s, specialist and doctoral students will be held at Bartow on Friday at 6 p.m.

UAB Graduate School will confer the university’s highest degrees on 63 students from 12 states and nine countries representing 25 disciplines, with about 52 students to be hooded during the ceremony.

Mark E. Pepin will be the speaker at the graduate commencement ceremony. He is graduating with a doctorate in biomedical engineering from the School of Engineering.

Undergraduate students will walk in ceremonies in Bartow on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Students in the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences will take part in the morning ceremony, and those in the schools of Business, Engineering, Public Health, Health Professions and Nursing will take part in the afternoon ceremony.

Alexandria Nicole Summerlin will be the commencement speaker for the morning ceremony. She is graduating with a B.S. in early childhood and elementary education from the School of Education.

Dianna Nichols will be the commencement speaker for the afternoon ceremony. She’s graduating with a B.S. degree in nursing from the School of Nursing, where she is an honors student.

Tickets are not required; but seating for the commencement ceremonies is first come, first served.

A to-do list for graduates, as well as information for guests, is available at uab.edu/commencement.

The ceremonies will be recorded and available for viewing on the website in early May.

‘A PHENOMENAL YEAR’

2019 is “a phenomenal year” for UAB undergraduates sharing their research at national and international events, said Gareth Jones, assistant director of the UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research, in a UAB media release.

Five University of Alabama at Birmingham undergraduate students will present their research at the World Conference of Undergraduate Research, or WCUR, in Oldenburg, Germany, in May.

Another UAB undergraduate, Daniel Mendoza, will present his research at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research in April.

At least 66 UAB undergraduates will present their research at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

All of these students are members of the UAB Honors College.

UAB students and the university all benefit from these research presentations, according to Jones. “It opens the eyes for these students to see hundreds of other students presenting,” he said. “It connects them all to the larger research world.”

“The UAB students get additional opportunities to practice presenting their research,” Jones said.

“Third, it’s great for our school — it puts UAB on the map,” he said.
