Many UAB employees are taking the lead in new sustainability initiatives on campus.

And the Graduate School will soon show off the school’s many graduate and professional programs at a recruitment fair.

GET INNOVATIVE

The Collat School of Business will play host to the Small Business Innovation workshop on Monday, June 24, from 9 a.m.-noon., according to a UAB news release.

The Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science will also take part.

Attendees will learn how their enterprises can benefit from federal funding through the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs, which enable small businesses to participate in research and development that has commercial potential.

Lili M. Portilla, the SBIR/STTR Program Director at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, will make a presentation.

The workshop will also show attendees how to collaborate with UAB programs and partners.

The event is free and open to the public. To see the agenda and reserve a spot, click here.

BE AN AMBASSADOR

In recent months, more than 70 UAB employees have worked to make the campus greener by becoming Sustainability Ambassadors, according to a UAB news release.

The Ambassadors promote sustainable ventures among their colleagues and help implement educational programming tailored to the needs of their departments.

For example, Shantay Williams helped start a sustainability committee in the UAB School of Nursing, where she serves as program manager. Each office at the school now has a recycling box, and the committee is looking at other possible initiatives.

“I want to do my fair share,” Williams said in the release. “We’re trying to preserve the Earth’s resources for generations to come.”

Sustainability Ambassadors must be full-time, benefits-eligible faculty or staff and have the support of a direct supervisor.

They must also be able to serve a one-year, August-to-August term, attend meetings in October and April and keep in regular contact with UAB Sustainability.
