Pull the cork for scholarships

The UAB National Alumni Society will host its 11th annual Uncork Education fundraiser — featuring wine and craft beer — on Sunday, Oct. 27, to raise money to fund student scholarships, according to UAB Media Relations.

The event, which has raised nearly $475,000 through the years, will be held at Alumni House on campus and features live and silent auctions and mystery prizes.

The tasting, along with heavy hors d’oeuvres, and silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the silent auction continuing until 7:50 p.m. The live auction is held at 7 p.m. The key unlocking for the stocked bars will be at 7:45 p.m.

At this year’s event, for the first time, attendees can avoid standing in line at the event and pre-order the popular Mystery Corks, Stocked Bar Keys and the 2019 Blazer Wine when registering.

Items in the live and silent auctions include Florida vacation rentals, original artwork, private cooking classes, meals at Birmingham restaurants and gourmet holiday meals for 12 people.

Tickets are $60 per person. To register, click here.

Pictures in a story

In honor of UAB’s 50th anniversary, the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts will present the exhibition, “Unfolding UAB: 50 Years of Photography from the UAB Archives,” from Oct. 21-Dec. 14.

The show, which features more than 80 photographs from UAB Archives and the Digital Image Gallery, helps tell the history of UAB as an institution and as a community.

An opening reception for “Unfolding UAB” will held be at AEIVA on Friday, Oct. 25,at 6 p.m.

The reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

The curators are Christina McClellan, the coordinator of collection, exhibitions and programs at AEIVA, and Tim Pennycuff, a UAB archivist and assistant director of historical collections.

Beginning as an extension program for the University of Alabama during the Great Depression, UAB added the medical campus in 1945 and — in 1969 — became a newly autonomous member of a new three-campus University of Alabama System.

AEIVA is location at 1221 10th Ave. S.near the Alys Stephens Center. For more information, go to uab.edu/uabarts call 975-6436.

Get your shot!

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 42 million people were affected by the flu during the 2018-2019 season. This flu season has started in America and is expected to run from October through late March.

And UAB is taking extra measures to promote flu education and prevention through its website, uab.edu/flu.

You can find out where to get your shot, what to do if you have the flu, how to avoid spreading it and other topics.

There are several good reasons for getting a flu shot, according to doctors. It can prevent you from getting the flu, reduce the symptoms you will experience and protect people you come in contact with from becoming infected.

The CDC recommends getting the flu shot before the end of October if possible, as it takes approximately two weeks for the vaccine to take effect.
