Wisdom from a master

Audrey Cefaly, an acclaimed Alabama playwright, will hold two master classes on campus on Friday, Feb. 14.

Cefaly will teach a class on subtext for Theatre UAB students. She’ll hold a second class, which will be open to the public, called “Audrey Cefaly’s Playwriting Vocabulary,” in the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m.

Cefaly’s visit is part of the Dramatist Guild Foundation’s Traveling Masters series.

In addition, the Department of Theatre will present a world premiere production of Cefaly’s “Tell Me Something Good” — a collection of short plays about human ache and longing —from March 9-13.

Cefaly has seen her work produced in Birmingham before.

“Love is a Blue Tick Hound: And Other Remedies for the Common Ache” had its world premiere at Terrific New Theatre, and “Maytag Virgin” had its Alabama premiere at Birmingham Festival Theatre

On Feb.11, speakers Kaleen Lavin, Jeremy McAdam, Samia O’Bryan, Margaret Bell and Devin Drummer will present “Exercise is a Powerful Medicine: How Should We Use It?”

Wednesday, Feb. 19: Simple Cooking With Heart. UAB Hospital North Pavilion, second floor atrium, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Cardiovascular Institute and the American Heart Association team up to serve tasty samples and distribute a new recipe booklet.
