On May 14, Five Points South will celebrate its 130th anniversary.

And on May 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Vulcan Park & Museum — along with the area’s retailers, bar owners and restaurateurs — will mark the anniversary by hosting the inaugural Taste of Five Points event, where attendees will be able to sample the celebrated cuisine and trendy retail that make the neighborhood one of Birmingham’s most vibrant.

“Our goal is for attendees to have a better understanding of the people and businesses that make up the culture of the Five Points neighborhood and, in turn, go to visit those establishments,” said Vulcan spokesperson Morgan Black.

The event will be on Vulcan Plaza as well as inside the museum, according to Black.

Taste of Five Points, sponsored by Alagasco, will serve as the culmination of the exhibit, “Patience, People and the Plan: The Revitalization of Five Points South,” on display at Vulcan through the end of May.

Some of the proceeds will go to Vulcan and some to a Five Points improvement project, according to REV Birmingham’s James Little, who said at least 25 merchants will take part. Those participating merchants include Orbit Salon, Starbucks, Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega Cafe, iiis optical shop, Chez Fonfon, Mellow Mushroom, Buck Mulligan’s, Dave’s Pub and more.

Dave’s Pub is creating a Five Points-themed cocktail, “The Storyteller,” that will be served at the event and at other participating area watering holes.

Admission is $35 ($30 in advance). Couples pay $55 ($50 in advance).
